  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution supporting the Richard David Kann

  3         Melanoma Foundation and recognizing Monday, May

  4         7, 2001, as Melanoma Monday--Skin Cancer

  5         Awareness Day.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation is

  8  dedicated to educating the residents of Florida about the

  9  prevention and early detection of skin cancer, and

10         WHEREAS, melanoma and other skin cancers affect more

11  than 1 million Americans each year and cause the death of more

12  than 10,000 Americans each year, and

13         WHEREAS, melanoma and other skin cancers are highly

14  preventable and curable when detected early, and

15         WHEREAS, education about the prevention and early

16  detection of skin cancer may significantly decrease the

17  incidence rate of skin cancer and the pain, trauma, and

18  expense associated with skin cancer morbidity and mortality,

19  and

20         WHEREAS, the residents of Florida are particularly

21  vulnerable to this disease due to the year-round sunny climate

22  of the state and overexposure to the ultraviolet radiation of

23  the sun, and

24         WHEREAS, the American Academy of Dermatology has

25  designated Monday, May 7, 2001, as Melanoma Monday--Skin

26  Cancer Awareness Day, and

27         WHEREAS, the state has a substantial interest in

28  promoting the health and welfare of children and families to

29  educate them concerning the prevention and early detection of

30  melanoma and other skin cancers, and

  1         WHEREAS, all Florida residents are encouraged to avoid

  2  overexposure to the sun during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,

  3  when the sun's rays are most dangerous; to apply sunscreen of

  4  SPF 15 or higher before going outside and reapply sunscreen

  5  frequently during outdoor activities; and to wear protective

  6  clothing when outdoors, including a wide-brimmed hat,

  7  long-sleeved shirt and long pants during prolonged periods of

  8  sun exposure, NOW THEREFORE,

10  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

11

12         That the Florida Senate recognizes Monday, May 7, 2001,

13  as Melanoma Monday--Skin Cancer Awareness Day.

14         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Florida Senate urges

15  all Floridians to make a conscious effort to help prevent

16  melanoma and other skin cancers.
