1 Senate Resolution No. ____
2 A resolution honoring the Hearing Research
3 Institute and recognizing May 4, 2001, as
4 Infant Hearing Awareness Day.

6 WHEREAS, there are more than 3 million deaf children in
7 this country, and
8 WHEREAS, more than 570 children are born deaf in this
9 state each year, and
10 WHEREAS, until recently many of these children did not
11 receive medical treatment or were misdiagnosed as autistic or
12 mentally retarded, and
13 WHEREAS, section 383.145, Florida Statutes, created by
14 the Florida Legislature in the 2000 Legislative Session,
15 provides for hearing screening of newborn children, and
16 WHEREAS, section 383.145, Florida Statutes, is
17 projected to save this state an average of $88,033 per child
18 and, more importantly, save these children from a lifetime of
19 silence and disability, thus enabling them to lead happy and
20 productive lives, and
21 WHEREAS, the Hearing Research Institute and its medical
22 director, Dr. Robert E. Pickard, were instrumental in the
23 creation of section 383.145, Florida Statutes, NOW, THEREFORE,
24
25 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
26
27 That the Hearing Research Institute and Dr. Robert E.
28 Pickard are hereby recognized for their dedication and work in
29 providing for newborn hearing screening.

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Florida Senate
2 recognizes May 4, 2001, as Infant Hearing Awareness Day in
3 this state.
4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
5 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the
6 Hearing Research Institute and Dr. Robert E. Pickard as a
7 tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
