15         On page 3, line 17,

17  insert:  
18         Section 1.  Effective upon this act becoming a law,
19  subsection (1) of section 235.061, Florida Statutes, is
20  amended to read:
21         235.061  Standards for relocatables used as classroom
22  space; inspections.--
23         (1)  The Commissioner of Education shall adopt rules
24  establishing standards for relocatables intended for long-term
25  use as classroom space at a public elementary school, middle
26  school, or high school. "Long-term use" means the use of
27  relocatables at the same educational plant for a period of 4
28  years or more. These rules must be implemented by July 1,
29  1998, and each relocatable acquired by a district school board
30  after the effective date of the rules and intended for
31  long-term use must comply with the standards. The rules shall

SENATE AMENDMENT Bill No. CS for CS for SB's 336 & 190 Amendment No. ___ Barcode 624676 1 require that, by July 1, 2002 July 1, 2001, relocatables that 2 fail to meet the standards may not be used as classrooms. The 3 standards shall protect the health, safety, and welfare of 4 occupants by requiring compliance with the Uniform Building 5 Code for Public Educational Facilities or other locally 6 adopted state minimum building codes to ensure the safety and 7 stability of construction and onsite installation; fire and 8 moisture protection; air quality and ventilation; appropriate 9 wind resistance; and compliance with the requirements of the 10 Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. If appropriate, the 11 standards must also require relocatables to provide access to 12 the same technologies available to similar classrooms within 13 the main school facility and, if appropriate, to be accessible 14 by adequate covered walkways. By July 1, 2000, the 15 commissioner shall adopt standards for all relocatables 16 intended for long-term use as classrooms.
