1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to environmental protection;
3 requiring that the Department of Environmental
4 Protection study the use in this state of MTBE
5 as a gasoline additive; requiring that the
6 department report its findings and
7 recommendations to the Legislature; requesting
8 that representatives of the petroleum industry
9 participate in the study; providing an
10 effective date.

12 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14 Section 1. The Department of Environmental Protection,
15 in consultation with representatives of the petroleum
16 industry, shall study the effects and consequences of the use
17 of the gasoline additive MTBE in this state, the areas of
18 concern resulting from the use of MTBE, any alternative
19 additives that may be used in place of MTBE, and the effects
20 and consequences of using those alternative additives. The
21 study must take into account the results of the study on MTBE
22 conducted by the Blue Ribbon Panel of the United States
23 Environmental Protection Agency, determine the applicability
24 of the results of that study, and determine actions that
25 should be undertaken in this state. By January 15, 2002, the
26 department shall submit to the Legislature a report containing
27 the results of its study and the department's recommendations
28 for legislation, if any. The Legislature requests that
29 representatives of the petroleum industry participate with the
30 department in the study to the extent practicable.

2 law.

5 SENATE SUMMARY
6 Requires the Department of Environmental Protection, in
consultation with representatives of the petroleum
7 industry, to study the use of MTBE as a gasoline
additive. Requires the department to study alternative
8 additives that may be used in place of MTBE. Requires the
department to report its findings and recommendations to
9 the Legislature by January 15, 2002.
