1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to environmental protection;
3 requiring that the Department of Environmental
4 Protection study the use in this state of MTBE
5 as a gasoline additive; requiring that the
6 department report its findings and
7 recommendations to the Legislature; requesting
8 that representatives of the petroleum industry
9 participate in the study; providing an
10 effective date.

12 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14 Section 1. The Department of Environmental Protection,
15 in consultation with representatives of the petroleum
16 industry, shall study the effects and consequences of the use
17 of the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in
18 this state, the areas of concern resulting from the use of
19 MTBE, any alternative additives that may be used in place of
20 MTBE, and the effects and consequences of using those
21 alternative additives. The study must take into account the
22 results of the study on MTBE conducted by the Blue Ribbon
23 Panel of the United States Environmental Protection Agency,
24 determine the applicability of the results of that study, and
25 determine actions that should be undertaken in this state. By
26 January 15, 2002, the department shall submit to the
27 Legislature a report containing the results of its study and
28 the department's recommendations for legislation, if any. The
29 Legislature requests that representatives of the petroleum
30 industry participate with the department in the study to the
31 extent practicable.

1 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
2 law.

7 There are no substantial changes. The term "MTBE" is spelled
out as methyl tertiary butyl ether the first time it is used
8 in the bill.
