  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to university health services

  3         support organizations; providing that such

  4         organizations may enter into specified

  5         arrangements with other entities for the

  6         benefit of university academic health sciences

  7         centers; providing for future review and repeal

  8         of s. 240.2995(1), F.S., relating to the

  9         establishment of university health services

10         support organizations; providing an effective

11         date.

13  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14

15         Section 1.  Subsection (1) of section 240.2995, Florida

16  Statutes, is amended to read:

17         240.2995  University health services support

18  organizations.--

19         (1)  Each state university is authorized to establish

20  university health services support organizations, which shall

21  have the ability to enter into, for the benefit of the

22  university academic health sciences center, and arrangements

23  with other entities as providers in other integrated health

24  care systems or similar entities.  To the extent required by

25  law or rule, university health services support organizations

26  shall become licensed as insurance companies, pursuant to

27  chapter 624, or be certified as health maintenance

28  organizations, pursuant to chapter 641.  University health

29  services support organizations shall have sole responsibility

30  for the acts, debts, liabilities, and obligations of the

31  organization.  In no case shall the state or university have

  1  any responsibility for such acts, debts, liabilities, and

  2  obligations incurred or assumed by university health services

  3  support organizations.

  4         Section 2.  Subsection (1) of section 240.2995, Florida

  5  Statutes, is repealed January 7, 2003, and shall be reviewed

  6  by the Legislature prior to that date.

  7         Section 3.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

  8  law.
