1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to public school instruction;
3 amending s. 233.061, F.S., relating to required
4 instruction; providing further requirements
5 pertaining to instruction in African-American
6 history; providing an effective date.

8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10 Section 1. Paragraph (g) of subsection (2) of section
11 233.061, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
12 233.061 Required instruction.--
13 (2) Members of the instructional staff of the public
14 schools, subject to the rules and regulations of the
15 commissioner, the state board, and the school board, shall
16 teach efficiently and faithfully, using the books and
17 materials required, following the prescribed courses of study,
18 and employing approved methods of instruction, the following:
19 (g) The history of African Americans, including the
20 history of African peoples before the political conflicts that
21 led to the development of slavery, the passage to America, the
22 enslavement experience, abolition, and the contributions of
23 African Americans to society. This course is to be a
24 one-semester class taught at the 9th-grade level, and
25 successful completion of the course is a requirement for high
26 school graduation.
27 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2001.

2 SENATE SUMMARY
3 Provides that the instruction in African-American history
which is currently required in public schools is to be a
4 one-semester course taught at the 9th-grade level and
that successful completion of the course is a
5 prerequisite for graduating from high school.
