  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating Representative Jerry

  3         G. Melvin as "Dean of the Florida House of

  4         Representatives."

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, in 1968, Jerry G. Melvin, of Fort Walton

  7  Beach, was elected to the Florida House of Representatives by

  8  the residents of District 7, a post to which he was reelected

  9  for five consecutive terms and in which he untiringly devoted

10  himself to the constituents of that district and, later, to

11  those of District 5, until his voluntary retirement in 1978,

12  and

13         WHEREAS, during this time as a member of the House,

14  Representative Melvin served as chair of the Committee on

15  Retirement, Personnel & Claims, and was the founding chair of

16  the Committee on Tourism and Economic Development, and

17         WHEREAS, in 1994, after a 16-year absence, Jerry G.

18  Melvin was again elected to the House of Representatives, at

19  this point to represent District 4, and, since his return to

20  state government, Representative Melvin has served two

21  consecutive terms as chair of the Committee on Education

22  Innovation and is currently chair of the Council for Lifelong

23  Learning, and

24         WHEREAS, with a total of 16 years of service,

25  Representative Jerry G. Melvin is the senior member of the

26  House of Representatives in terms of service, and

27         WHEREAS, the designation of "Dean" is a time-honored

28  title that is traditionally reserved for the longest-serving

29  member of the House of Representatives, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  4         That the members of the House of Representatives are

  5  pleased to recognize Representative Jerry G. Melvin, of Fort

  6  Walton Beach, for his long and distinguished service to the

  7  people of this state and are honored to confer upon him the

  8  title of "Dean of the Florida House of Representatives" for

  9  the 2000-2002 biennium and to extend to him their heartiest

10  congratulations on his achievement of this milestone.

11         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

12  be presented to Representative Jerry G. Melvin as a tangible

13  token of this designation and of the sentiments expressed

14  herein.
