  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating March 29, 2001, as

  3         F.S.U. Day.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, the sesquicentennial anniversary of Florida

  6  State University was observed on January 24, 2001, and will be

  7  celebrated throughout 2001, the 150th year after its

  8  establishment by the Legislature in 1851 as the Seminary West

  9  of the Suwanee River, and

10         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State

11  University is the oldest continuous site of higher education

12  in Florida and is home to the state's first chapter of Phi

13  Beta Kappa, and

14         WHEREAS, Florida State University is ranked third

15  nationally in revenues generated from scientific research and

16  discoveries and, in 1994, was designated as a "Research I"

17  institution by the Carnegie Foundation, thus placing Florida

18  State in an elite group of the nation's top research

19  universities, and

20         WHEREAS, today the university's mission emphasizes

21  teaching, research, and public service, with 17 independent

22  colleges and schools, the newest being the College of

23  Medicine, and offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in

24  over 570 fields, many of which are nationally recognized

25  programs, and

26         WHEREAS, as Florida's most "wired" campus and a leader

27  in the use of new technologies, Florida State University is

28  setting the standard for distance learning and utilizing

29  technology in the classroom and campuswide, and

30         WHEREAS, with a long-continuing tradition of promoting

31  racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity, along with aggressive

  1  recruitment of diverse groups of students, the university has

  2  made the college experience an enriching one for its students

  3  and continues to be a tremendous source of pride for its

  4  students, faculty, alumni, friends, and administrators, as

  5  well as for all citizens of the state, and

  6         WHEREAS, Florida State University has a strong

  7  reputation in the fine and performing arts, having developed

  8  distinguished programs in theatre, music, dance, and film, and

  9  has established a statewide presence with the Asolo Theatre,

10  the Ringling Museum, and the Appleton Museum, and

11         WHEREAS, with its strong history as a liberal arts

12  college, commitment to undergraduate education, and extensive

13  and distinguished research in facilities such as the National

14  High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University is

15  truly on the cutting edge of higher education, NOW, THEREFORE,

16  

17  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

18  Florida:

19  

20         That the House of Representatives hereby designates

21  March 29, 2001, as F.S.U. Day in Tallahassee in recognition of

22  Florida State University's 150 years as an outstanding

23  institution of higher education.

24         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

25  be presented to Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte, President of

26  Florida State University, as a tangible token of the

27  sentiments expressed herein.
