  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating March 30, 2001, as

  3         "Florida Doctors' Day."

  4

  5         WHEREAS, often expending long, unpredictable hours

  6  while endeavoring to balance the conflicting demands of their

  7  professions with the need to be active, positive participants

  8  in the lives of their families, physicians devote themselves

  9  daily to caring for the health and well-being of people in all

10  segments of our society, and

11         WHEREAS, first observed in 1933 by a group in Winder,

12  Georgia, as a tribute to their physician spouses, Doctors' Day

13  also commemorates the first administration of anethesia by a

14  physician in 1842, and, as an indication of the high regard in

15  which he held medical doctors, President George H.W. Bush in

16  1990 designated an official day of recognition for the members

17  of this profession, and

18         WHEREAS, the mission of the Florida Medical Association

19  is to serve as an advocate for physicians and their patients,

20  to promote the public health, to ensure high standards in

21  medical education, practice, and ethics, and to enhance the

22  quality and availability of health care, and Doctors' Day

23  provides an opportunity for patients and physicians alike to

24  set aside the distractions of today's often-contentious health

25  care environment and focus on the extraordinary calling of

26  medicine, and

27         WHEREAS, the Florida Medical Association has for many

28  years sponsored the "Doctor of the Day" program, in which,

29  during the regular legislative sessions, both the House of

30  Representatives and the Senate select a volunteer physician to

  1  be on duty at the Capitol on the days the legislators are in

  2  session, and

  3         WHEREAS, over the years, the red carnation has become

  4  the symbol of Doctors' Day, denoting the qualities of love,

  5  charity, sacrifice, bravery, and courage, and is being worn on

  6  this day by physicians and their spouses visiting the Capitol,

  7  NOW, THEREFORE,

  9  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

10  Florida:

11

12         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

13  deliberations to pay tribute to those physicians wearing red

14  carnations, to their spouses, and to their colleagues

15  throughout the state, and hereby designates Friday, March 30,

16  2001, as "Florida Doctors' Day" in recognition of the selfless

17  service afforded by these dedicated professionals to the

18  people of Florida.
