  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating the month of March

  3         2001 as "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month."

  4

  5         WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly

  6  diagnosed cancer among both men and women, and is the second

  7  leading cause of cancer death in the United States each year,

  8  and

  9         WHEREAS, research has shown not only that regular

10  screening practices prevent colorectal cancer, but that, when

11  localized colorectal cancer is diagnosed early, there is a

12  91-percent survival rate among its victims, and

13         WHEREAS, advancing age has been found to be the

14  greatest risk factor leading to colorectal cancer, yet

15  nationally, less than half of individuals above 50 years of

16  age receive annual screenings for the disease, and

17         WHEREAS, it is recognized that dietary factors greatly

18  influence the risk of developing this type of cancer and that

19  a healthy diet plays a significant role in the prevention of

20  the disease, and

21         WHEREAS, inasmuch as early detection is crucial to the

22  successful treatment and cure of colorectal cancer, and the

23  value of regular screenings and a proper diet in the

24  prevention of the disease cannot be overemphasized, NOW,

25  THEREFORE,

27  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

28  Florida:

30         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

31  deliberations to designate the month of March 2001 as

  1  "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month," a time in which to stress

  2  to the public the importance of becoming knowledgeable of the

  3  risks, symptoms, and prevention of colorectal cancer, and to

  4  urge all Florida residents to become better informed

  5  concerning the practices they may adopt to avoid this disease

  6  or to lessen its devastating effect on their lives.
