  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating April 2, 2001, as

  3         "Space Day in Florida."

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the space industry has more than a $4.5

  6  billion economic impact on the State of Florida, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida's economy has prospered, with more

  8  than 23,000 Floridians employed by the space program, and

  9         WHEREAS, Florida has been an internationally recognized

10  center for space research, education, innovation, and

11  industry, and

12         WHEREAS, 26 of Florida's 67 counties are home to

13  businesses in the space industry, and

14         WHEREAS, the space industry's partners in Florida

15  include state and federal agencies and commercial enterprises,

16  and

17         WHEREAS, Florida is building a premier space research

18  facility, the Space Experiment Research and Processing

19  Laboratory, at Kennedy Space Center to support International

20  Space Station research projects, and

21         WHEREAS, Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral,

22  Florida, is the gateway to the International Space Station,

23  and

24         WHEREAS, the International Space Station now represents

25  Florida and the United States as well as 16 cooperating

26  nations for scientific research and discovery, and

27         WHEREAS, Destiny, the United States-built research lab,

28  was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on board the Space

29  Shuttle Atlantis on February 7, 2001, and

30         WHEREAS, the crew of the International Space Station

31  will perform research in a variety of scientific disciplines

  1  advancing the world's understanding of life sciences, earth

  2  sciences, and materials processing, while fostering commercial

  3  research activities in space, and

  4         WHEREAS, space research touches the lives of people

  5  everywhere, increases the rate of invention, expands

  6  scientific knowledge, inspires our children, and satisfies our

  7  ancient need to explore and achieve, and

  8         WHEREAS, the International Space Station will be the

  9  largest space orbiter in history at a size of 1,040,000

10  pounds, and measuring 356 feet long by 290 feet wide, and

11         WHEREAS, the International Space Station orbits the

12  Earth once every 90 minutes at an approximate speed of 17,000

13  miles per hour, and

14         WHEREAS, the Expedition Two crew of the International

15  Space Station, Commander Yury Usachev, Flight Engineer James

16  Voss, and Flight Engineer Susan Helms have joined a meeting of

17  the Florida House of Representatives, NOW, THEREFORE,

18

19  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

20  Florida:

21

22         That the Florida House of Representatives hereby

23  designates April 2, 2001, as "Space Day in Florida" in

24  recognition of the space community's contributions to Florida.

25         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution

26  be presented to the Spaceport Florida Authority and the

27  National Aeronautics and Space Administration as a tangible

28  token of the sentiments expressed herein.
