1 House Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing April 2001 as Child
3 Abuse Prevention Month.

5 WHEREAS, 85,644 children in Florida were identified as
6 having been abused or neglected in reports closed during
7 fiscal year 1999-2000, and
8 WHEREAS, in 1998, 82 children died as the result of a
9 verified finding of abuse or neglect and an additional 39
10 deaths showed some indication of abuse or neglect, and
11 WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect causes significant
12 trauma to the abused child, and to society, inflicting upon
13 children serious illness and injury resulting in physical,
14 intellectual, and emotional impairment, or death, and
15 WHEREAS, abused or neglected children are at much
16 greater risk of becoming abusive or neglectful parents, and
17 WHEREAS, prevention and early intervention can reduce
18 the costs society must bear in dealing with the results of
19 child abuse and neglect and can help children and families
20 avoid the overburdened and expensive social welfare and
21 criminal justice systems, and
22 WHEREAS, children deserve the opportunity to grow and
23 thrive in healthful environments, free from threats of
24 violence and harm, and
25 WHEREAS, during the month of April, public and private
26 agencies, child care professionals, child advocates, and
27 residents will be increasing the public's awareness of child
28 abuse and neglect prevention, NOW, THEREFORE,

30 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
31 Florida:
