  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Florida's Healthy

  3         Start coalitions and designating April 11,

  4         2001, as "Healthy Start Coalitions Day."

  5

  6         WHEREAS, there are 32 Healthy Start coalitions

  7  throughout the state, each charged with the mission of

  8  reducing infant mortality, and these coalitions have played a

  9  large part in improving Florida's rank in infant mortality to

10  24th in the nation, and

11         WHEREAS, Healthy Start coalitions, comprised of

12  community volunteers who are uniquely positioned to assess and

13  respond to maternal and child health needs and to direct

14  funding toward services that address those needs, have created

15  a seamless system of care that benefited more than 85,000

16  women and their families in Florida in the year 2000, and

17         WHEREAS, in one recent year, Healthy Start coalitions

18  collectively leveraged almost $13 million, including 100,000

19  volunteer hours of in-kind services and resources, cash,

20  grants, and projects related to maternal and infant health,

21  NOW, THEREFORE,

23  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

24  Florida:

26         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

27  deliberations to applaud the outstanding efforts of, and

28  recognize the remarkable benefits afforded by, the state's

29  dedicated Healthy Start coalitions and to designate April 11,

30  2001, as "Healthy Start Coalitions Day" in Florida.
