  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing the Miami Edison

  3         Senior High School girls' basketball team for

  4         winning the State Class 6A Championship on

  5         March 3, 2001.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Public Schools have won only three

  8  of the previous 12 Final Four Championships since the girls'

  9  state championships began in 1976, and

10         WHEREAS, the Red Raiders of Miami Edison Senior High

11  School, who last won the state championship in 1995, were

12  defeated in the final round of the state championship only 1

13  year ago by the Bears of Winter Springs Senior High School,

14  and

15         WHEREAS, the eight seniors on the team, including

16  Chanyekeson Ambroise, Rochelle Brown, Linda Christian, Gerline

17  Guillaume, Carline Ofelus, Micheline Philogene, Lucila Simon,

18  Scholanda Dorrell, who was the team's leading scorer, and

19  Florence Williams, who was the tournament's Most Valuable

20  Player, and their underclass teammates, including Nicolea

21  Coley, Nadage Dareus, Kalondra McKenzie, Earnasha Houston, and

22  Sylvia Fowles, who is the only woman in Florida's history to

23  attempt a dunk in a state championship game, were especially

24  anxious to do well in the tournament, as the Bears of Winter

25  Springs were attempting to become only the sixth school in

26  state history to win three state championships, and

27         WHEREAS, the Edison High Red Raiders made their fourth

28  Final Four appearance within the past 7 years under the

29  leadership of Coach Denise Novak, and captured their second

30  state championship in a thrilling 65-to-56 victory over the

  1  Bears of Winter Springs before 745 fans at the Lakeland

  2  Center, NOW, THEREFORE,

  4  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida:

  6

  7         That the House of Representatives commends the Red

  8  Raiders girls' basketball team of Miami Edison Senior High

  9  School for winning the State Class 6A Championship.

10         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

11  be presented to Coach Denise Novak and each team member as a

12  tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
