2 An act relating to newborn infant screening;
3 authorizing formation of a study group under
4 Children's Medical Services of the Department
5 of Health; providing purpose; providing
6 membership; requiring recommendations and a
7 plan for expanding newborn infant screening
8 requirements; requiring a report to the
9 Legislature; providing an effective date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. Children's Medical Services of the
14 Department of Health is authorized to convene a study group
15 for the purpose of conducting comparative research regarding
16 the expanded infant screening programs currently operating in
17 other states and the use of tandem mass spectrometry in such
18 programs. The study group shall consist of members of the
19 Genetics and Infant Screening Advisory Council designated by
20 the Secretary of Health and a representative from the Florida
21 chapter of the March of Dimes and shall operate under the
22 auspices of Children's Medical Services. Based on data
23 available from the states operating expanded infant screening
24 programs, the study group shall make recommendations regarding
25 the expansion of the newborn infant screening requirements
26 provided in s. 383.14, Florida Statutes, and shall develop an
27 expanded newborn infant screening plan tailored to the needs
28 of Florida's population. The study group's research shall be
29 completed by August 1, 2002, and its recommendations and plan
30 shall be submitted to the Legislature by September 1, 2002.

1 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a

Authorizes formation of a study group under Children's
7 Medical Services of the Department of Health, made up of
members of the Genetics and Infant Screening Advisory
8 Council designated by the Secretary of Health and a
representative from the Florida chapter of the March of
9 Dimes, to research expanded newborn infant screening
programs currently operating in other states. Requires
10 the study group to complete its research by August 1,
2002, and submit a report to the Legislature, with
11 recommendations and a plan for expanding newborn infant
screening requirements in Florida, by September 1, 2002.
