11  Senator Smith moved the following amendment:

13         Senate Amendment 

14         On page 3, line 18, after the period

16  insert:  It is further declared by the Legislature that

17  emergency medical technicians and paramedics perform municipal

18  and state functions, that it is their duty to protect and

19  preserve life at their own risk and peril, and that their

20  activities are vital to the public health, safety, and

21  welfare.  Therefore, the Legislature declares that it fulfills

22  an important state interest to provide workers' compensation

23  coverage to emergency medical technicians and paramedics while

24  engaged in basic life support and advanced life support

25  services due to an emergency in this state that is outside of

26  their employer's jurisdiction or area of responsibility.
