1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to the designation of
3 transportation facilities; creating s. 335.081,
4 F.S.; providing limitations on the duty of the
5 Department of Transportation to erect signage
6 relating to road designations and bridge
7 designations made by the Legislature; providing
8 requirements for requests to establish road and
9 bridge designations and redesignations;
10 providing an effective date.

12 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
13
14 Section 1. Section 335.081, Florida Statutes, is
15 created to read:
16 335.081 Requirements for requests for road or bridge
17 designations.--
18 (1) When the Legislature establishes a road
19 designation or a bridge designation, the department must place
20 markers only at the termini specified for each highway segment
21 or bridge designated by the law creating the designation. The
22 department may place other markers as appropriate for the
23 transportation facility that has been designated. These
24 designations are for honorary or memorial purposes or to
25 distinguish a particular facility and do not require a local
26 government or private party to change any street sign, mailing
27 address, or listing in a 911 system or other
28 emergency-telephone-number system.
29 (2) The Legislature may not consider establishing a
30 road or bridge designation that names a person unless the

1 person has been deceased for at least 2 years with the
2 exception of roads or bridges located:
3 (a) Within a municipality if the designation has been
4 approved by resolution of the governing body of the
5 municipality;
6 (b) Within an unincorporated area if the designation
7 has been approved by resolution of the board of county
8 commissioners; or
9 (c) Within more than one local jurisdiction if the
10 designation has been approved by resolution of the governing
11 boards of each affected jurisdiction.
12 (3) A road or bridge that has previously been
13 designated may not be redesignated unless the road or bridge
14 is located:
15 (a)1. Within a municipality if the designation has
16 been approved by resolution of the governing board of the
17 municipality;
18 2. Within an unincorporated area if the designation
19 has been approved by resolution of the board of county
20 commissioners; or
21 3. Within more than one local jurisdiction if the
22 designation has been approved by resolution of the governing
23 board of each affected jurisdiction; and
24 (b) The previous designation is removed.
25 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
26 law.
