1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to postsecondary education;
3 providing a short title; amending s. 240.1201,
4 F.S.; providing that active members of the
5 Florida National Guard are residents of this
6 state for tuition purposes; providing an
7 effective date.

9 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11 Section 1. This act may be cited as the "Sergeant
12 Larry Bowman Act."
13 Section 2. Paragraph (a) of subsection (10) of section
14 240.1201, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
15 240.1201 Determination of resident status for tuition
16 purposes.--Students shall be classified as residents or
17 nonresidents for the purpose of assessing tuition fees in
18 public community colleges and universities.
19 (10) The following persons shall be classified as
20 residents for tuition purposes:
21 (a) Active duty members of the Armed Services of the
22 United States residing or stationed in this state, their
23 spouses, and dependent children, and active members of the
24 Florida National Guard who qualify under s. 250.10(7) and (8)
25 for the tuition assistance program.
26 Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.

1 STATEMENT OF SUBSTANTIAL CHANGES CONTAINED IN
COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR
2 Senate Bill 128

4 The bill provides that members of the Florida National Guard
who meet the requirements for the tuition assistance program
5 at Florida's public postsecondary institutions, as created by
s. 250.10(7), F.S., must be classified as state residents for
6 tuition purposes, as specified in the original bill.
7 All U.S. reservists are not included.
