1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to high school athletics;
3 creating s. 232.4255, F.S.; requiring a
4 complete physical assessment for each student
5 who participates in organized public high
6 school athletics; providing requirements and
7 responsibility for the payment of costs of such
8 assessments; providing an effective date.

10 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

12 Section 1. Section 232.4255, Florida Statutes, is
13 created to read:
14 232.4255 Physical assessments for high school
15 athletes.--Prior to participation each year, each student who
16 participates in organized high school athletics must receive a
17 complete physical assessment. The assessment must be performed
18 by a physician licensed under chapter 458 or chapter 459 and
19 must include a complete cardiovascular assessment, including,
20 but not limited to, an electrocardiogram. The
21 electrocardiogram must be analyzed by a person who is licensed
22 or trained as a specialist in electrocardiogram analysis. It
23 shall be the responsibility of the student to pay the costs of
24 such physical assessment with the exception of a student
25 enrolled in the Florida Kidcare program or Medicaid, in which
26 case costs shall be covered by the program.
27 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.
