  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to corrections; amending s.

  3         944.02, F.S.; redefining the term "prisoner"

  4         for purposes of the state corrections code;

  5         providing an effective date.

  7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  8

  9         Section 1.  Subsection (6) of section 944.02, Florida

10  Statutes, is amended to read:

11         944.02  Definitions.--The following words and phrases

12  used in this chapter shall, unless the context clearly

13  indicates otherwise, have the following meanings:

14         (6)  "Prisoner" means any person who is under civil or

15  criminal arrest and in the lawful custody of any law

16  enforcement official, or any person convicted and sentenced by

17  any court and committed to or detained in any municipal or

18  county jail or state prison, prison farm, or penitentiary, or

19  to the custody of the department pursuant to lawful authority,

20  as provided by law.

21         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.
