  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to retired judges; amending s.

  3         25.073, F.S.; redefining the term "retired

  4         justice" or "retired judge" with respect to

  5         certain justices or judges assigned to

  6         temporary duty; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  9  

10         Section 1.  Subsection (1) of section 25.073, Florida

11  Statutes, is amended to read:

12         25.073  Retired justices or judges assigned to

13  temporary duty; additional compensation; appropriation.--

14         (1)  For purposes of this section, the term "retired

15  justice" or "retired judge" means any former justice or judge

16  who:

17         (a)  Has served in a judicial office and meets the

18  criteria of the Florida Supreme Court to be approved for

19  temporary duty as a judge or justice; and after July 1, 2002,

20  all persons eligible and approved for temporary duty must have

21  served in a judicial office for a minimum of 10 years; and

22         (b)  His or her practice of law is limited as provided

23  by the Florida Supreme Court for retired judges or justices.

24  Has not been defeated in seeking reelection to, or has not

25  failed to be retained in seeking retention in, his or her last

26  judicial office; and

27         (b)  Is not engaged in the practice of law.

28         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.

      Redefines the terms "retired justice" or "retired judge"
  4    to mean any former justice or judge who has served in a
      judicial office and meets the criteria of the Florida
  5    Supreme Court to be approved for temporary duty as a
      justice or judge; and after July 1, 2002, all persons
  6    eligible and approved for temporary duty must have served
      in a judicial office for a minimum of 10 years and his or
  7    her practice of law is limited as provided by the Florida
      Supreme Court for retired judges or justices.
