1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to newborn infant screening;
3 authorizing formation of a study group under
4 Children's Medical Services of the Department
5 of Health; providing purpose; providing
6 membership; requiring recommendations and a
7 plan for expanding newborn infant screening
8 requirements; requiring a report to the
9 Legislature; providing an effective date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. Children's Medical Services of the
14 Department of Health is authorized to convene a study group
15 for the purpose of conducting comparative research regarding
16 the expanded infant screening programs currently operating in
17 other states and the use of tandem mass spectrometry in such
18 programs. The study group shall consist of members of the
19 Genetics and Infant Screening Advisory Council and a member of
20 the Florida chapter of the March of Dimes designated by the
21 Secretary of Health and a representative from the Florida
22 chapter of the March of Dimes and shall operate under the
23 auspices of Children's Medical Services. Based on data
24 available from the states operating expanded infant screening
25 programs, the study group shall make recommendations regarding
26 the expansion of the newborn infant screening requirements
27 provided in section 383.14, Florida Statutes, and shall
28 develop an expanded newborn infant screening plan tailored to
29 the needs of Florida's population. The study group's research
30 shall be completed by August 1, 2002, and its recommendations

1 and plan shall be submitted to the Legislature by September 1,
2 2002.
3 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
4 law.

Authorizes formation of a study group under Children's

10 Council and a member of the Florida chapter of the March
of Dimes designated by the Secretary of Health and a
11 representative from the Florida chapter of the March of

the study group to complete its research by August 1,
13 2002, and submit a report to the Legislature, with

14 screening requirements in Florida, by September 1, 2002.
