1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to safe transportation for
3 children; creating s. 335.066, F.S.;
4 establishing the Safe Paths to Schools Program
5 in the Department of Transportation; requiring
6 consideration of the planning and construction
7 of bicycle and pedestrian ways; authorizing a
8 grant program to fund projects; providing
9 rulemaking authority; providing an effective
10 date.

12 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14 Section 1. Section 335.066, Florida Statutes, is
15 created to read:
16 335.066 Safe Paths to Schools Program.--
17 (1) There is established in the Department of
18 Transportation the Safe Paths to Schools Program to consider
19 the planning and construction of bicycle and pedestrian ways
20 to provide safe transportation for children from neighborhoods
21 to schools, parks, and the state's greenways and trails
22 system.
23 (2) As a part of the Safe Paths to Schools Program,
24 the department may establish a grant program to fund local,
25 regional, and state bicycle and pedestrian projects that
26 support the program.
27 (3) The department may adopt appropriate rules
28 pursuant to ss. 120.536(1) and 120.54 for the administration
29 of the Safe Paths to Schools Program.
30 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.
