1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to the Medal of Heroism;
3 providing that designated persons are eligible
4 to receive the Medal of Heroism; providing an
5 effective date.

7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

9 Section 1. (1) The Governor may award a medal of
10 heroism of appropriate design, with ribbons and appurtenances,
11 to law enforcement or corrections officers, as defined in
12 section 943.10(14), Florida Statutes, firefighters, as defined
13 in section 112.191(1)(b), Florida Statutes, emergency medical
14 technicians, as defined in section 401.23, Florida Statutes,
15 or paramedics, as defined in section 401.23, Florida Statutes,
16 who have distinguished themselves conspicuously by gallantry
17 and intrepidity and who risk their lives deliberately, above
18 and beyond the call of duty, while:
19 (a) Performing duty in their respective positions; and
20 (b) Engaging in hazardous or perilous activities to
21 preserve lives, with the knowledge that such activities might
22 result in great personal harm to themselves.
23 (2) The candidates or persons seeking to nominate
24 candidates for the award must make written application to the
25 Governor. The Governor may refer applications to the Florida
26 Department of Law Enforcement, the Department of Community
27 Affairs, or to a private association for advice and
28 recommendations regarding the applications.
29 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.
