  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to high school athletics;

  3         requiring public high schools to provide for

  4         complete physical assessments for all students

  5         who participate in organized high school

  6         athletics; providing requirements for such

  7         assessments; providing an effective date.

  9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11         Section 1.  Physical assessments for high school

12  athletes.--

13         (1)  Each public high school must provide for a

14  complete physical assessment for each student who participates

15  in organized high school athletics, to be completed prior to

16  participation. The assessment must be performed by a physician

17  licensed under chapter 458 or chapter 459, Florida Statutes,

18  and must include a complete cardiovascular assessment,

19  including, but not limited to, an electrocardiogram (EKG).

20         (2)  The electrocardiogram performed pursuant to

21  subsection (1) must be analyzed by a person who is licensed or

22  trained as a specialist in EKG analysis.

23         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.
