1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act designating September 11 of each year as
3 "Florida Rescue Workers' Day"; creating section
4 683.26, F.S.; providing an effective date.

6 WHEREAS, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,
7 resulted in an unprecedented loss of innocent civilian life on
8 American soil, and
9 WHEREAS, public safety officers immediately responded
10 at the locations of the attacks, in New York City, Washington,
11 D.C., and Pennsylvania, and were responsible for saving many
12 lives, and
13 WHEREAS, the selfless dedication of many of these
14 rescue workers led to the tragic loss of their lives, and
15 WHEREAS, 343 New York City Firefighters, 23 New York
16 City Police Officers, and 37 Port Authority of New York and
17 New Jersey Officers either died or are still missing, and
18 WHEREAS, 24 Urban Search and Rescue Teams from across
19 the United States, including 72 members of Florida's Search
20 and Rescue Teams, quickly reported to the affected areas to
21 support local rescue and clean-up efforts and to help replace
22 the rescue workers who had fallen in the line of duty, and
23 WHEREAS, the efforts of these individuals, and their
24 immediate response at the affected areas, led to the loss of
25 still more rescue workers' lives in the service of their
26 fellow Americans, NOW, THEREFORE,

28 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

30 Section 1. Section 683.26, Florida Statutes, is
31 created to read:

1 683.26 Florida Rescue Workers' Day.--September 11 of
2 each year is designated as "Florida Rescue Workers' Day," in
3 recognition of the sacrifices made by Florida rescue workers
4 in the face of unthinkable tragedy.
5 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
6 law.
