2 A resolution in memory of Mayra Capote, victim
3 of a tragic automobile accident.

5 WHEREAS, a grieving mother and sister mourn the loss of
6 a beautiful, vibrant life that was snuffed out on September 8,
7 1999, when 14-year-old Mayra Capote, along with two other
8 students from Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, was
9 killed in a tragic automobile accident as the three friends
10 hurried back to school following an off-campus lunch break,
11 and
12 WHEREAS, in response to this tragedy, and to prevent
13 future tragedies relating to off-campus lunch periods, the
14 Miami-Dade County public schools approved a plan of action to
15 close all senior high school campuses during lunch periods by
16 the opening of the school year 2004-2005, and
17 WHEREAS, born October 4, 1984, Mayra Capote was the
18 light of her mother's eyes and the adored friend, caregiver,
19 and protector of her older sister, Elizabeth, who has been
20 disabled since birth and who keenly misses the companionship
21 and affection of her sister, and
22 WHEREAS, Mayra Capote will forever be remembered by her
23 mother, sister, and friends as a friendly, outgoing, happy
24 child, loving and caring, with a special heart for those less
25 fortunate than she, NOW, THEREFORE,

27 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

29 That the Florida Senate expresses its heartfelt
30 condolences to the mother, sister, and friends of Mayra
31 Capote.

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
2 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Mayra and
3 Elizabeth Capote, mother and sister, respectively, of the late
4 young Mayra Capote, as a tangible token of the sentiments of
5 the Florida Senate.
