  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to highway designations;

  3         designating a portion of State Road A1A as

  4         "Morris Lapidus Boulevard"; providing an

  5         effective date.

  7         WHEREAS, Morris Lapidus was brought to this country in

  8  1902 at 6 months of age by Russian-Jewish immigrant parents,

  9  was raised in poverty in New York, and graduated from Columbia

10  University in 1927 with a degree in architecture, and

11         WHEREAS, Morris Lapidus began exercising his influence

12  on the style of Miami Beach as an associate architect in 1947,

13  contributing his unique flair to numerous hotels, and began

14  his career as architect with the Fontainebleau, completed in

15  1954, and

16         WHEREAS, his architecture established Miami Beach as

17  the resort destination of the world and made that architecture

18  the ideal of the resort experience, and

19         WHEREAS, Morris Lapidus' style brought glamor and

20  elegance to South Florida and by its design invited and

21  created a new enterprise for film in the area, and

22         WHEREAS, Lincoln Road Mall, designed by Morris Lapidus

23  pro bono, today is considered the heart of Miami Beach, and

24         WHEREAS, the Theater of the Performing Arts, home of

25  "The Jackie Gleason Show," was designed by Morris Lapidus

26  Associates, which designed hotels, apartment buildings,

27  schools, and hospitals on Miami Beach from 1947 to 1983, and

28         WHEREAS, Morris Lapidus has been honored and recognized

29  by the Smithsonian Institution as an "American Original," NOW,

30  THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  2

  3         Section 1.  That portion of State Road A1A that begins

  4  2,000 feet north of relocated 44th Street and extends south to

  5  just south of Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, including that

  6  portion of State Road A1A between 44th Street and 25th Street

  7  on which southbound traffic is carried on Indian Creek Drive

  8  and northbound traffic is carried on Collins Avenue, is

  9  designated "Morris Lapidus Boulevard." The Department of

10  Transportation is directed to erect suitable markers

11  designating "Morris Lapidus Boulevard."

12         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

13  law.
