2 A resolution recognizing February 14, 2002, as
3 "Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day."

5 WHEREAS, the Florida Developmental Disabilities
6 Council, Inc., is the Florida entity charged by federal
7 legislation to plan and advocate for programs that allow
8 persons with developmental disabilities to achieve optimum
9 independence and to promote innovative programs and practices
10 that improve the quality of life for these individuals, and
11 WHEREAS, the Florida Developmental Disabilities
12 Council, Inc., sponsors events like "DD Awareness Day" to
13 provide a setting in which other agencies and organizations
14 can provide information about services and products for
15 persons having a disability and promote understanding about
16 the challenges and obstacles in the everyday lives of persons
17 having a disability, and
18 WHEREAS, "DD Awareness Day" is an appropriate time to
19 recognize Florida's public-policy accomplishments concerning
20 persons having a disability and also to identify the
21 improvements to public policy which are needed to ensure
22 inclusion and that appropriate services are obtained by all of
23 Florida's residents having a developmental disability, and
24 WHEREAS, the Florida Developmental Disabilities
25 Council, Inc., on February 14, 2002, will honor two
26 outstanding legislators for their hard work and dedication in
27 making the lives of persons having a disability better, by
28 presenting to Representative Sandy Murman and Senator Ken
29 Pruitt the 2002 Outstanding Legislator Awards for their
30 advocacy on behalf of Florida's residents having a
31 developmental disability, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

3 That the Florida Senate commends the Florida
4 Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc., for its
5 encouragement of all Floridians to actively participate in
6 events that appropriately recognize and celebrate the diverse
7 population of this state, including persons having a
8 developmental disability.
9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate recognizes
10 February 14, 2002, as "Developmental Disabilities Awareness
11 Day" and joins the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council,
12 Inc., in urging all Florida residents to promote, sponsor, and
13 participate in "DD Awareness Day."
