1 Senate Resolution No. ____
2 A resolution encouraging county governments to
3 adopt youth advisory committees modeled after
4 the Youth Advisory Committee of Pinellas
5 County.

7 WHEREAS, the Pinellas County Youth Advisory Committee,
8 having been founded by board resolution in February 2001,
9 successfully serves as an advisory board to the Pinellas
10 County Board of County Commissioners, and
11 WHEREAS, the group is composed of 35 students from high
12 schools throughout the Pinellas County area, appointed by the
13 Board of County Commissioners and various other youth-related
14 agencies, who represent teens throughout the county and serve
15 as an example for the entire State of Florida, and
16 WHEREAS, the group has brought before the county
17 commission ideas concerning recreation opportunities for
18 youth, a teen crisis hotline, voting education for high-school
19 students, and other issues pertinent with their peers within
20 Pinellas County and the youth of Florida, and
21 WHEREAS, the Pinellas County Board of County
22 Commissioners has come to rely on the group for their
23 observations and recommendations concerning matters affecting
24 teens throughout the county, and
25 WHEREAS, a member of the Youth Advisory Committee has
26 been appointed by the Pinellas County Commission to serve as a
27 voting member of the county's park board, and
28 WHEREAS, working with Florida Senator Jim Sebesta, the
29 group has successfully introduced legislation in the Florida
30 Senate calling for specific teen-voter-education parameters to

1 be included in the public school system's academic curricula,
2 NOW, THEREFORE,

4 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
5
6 That the Florida Senate encourages all county
7 governments within the State of Florida to adopt a youth
8 advisory committee to provide input to their elected
9 officials, using the Youth Advisory Committee of Pinellas
10 County as the model to follow.
