2 A resolution celebrating March 5, 2002, as
3 "F.S.U. Day."

5 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State
6 University is the oldest continuous site of higher education
7 in Florida and holds the state's first chapter of Phi Beta
8 Kappa, and
9 WHEREAS, in 1994, the Florida State University was
10 designated as a "Research I" institution by the Carnegie
11 Foundation, thus placing Florida State in an elite group of
12 the nation's top research universities, and
13 WHEREAS, the solid foundation for this "Research I"
14 university was laid through its role as the state's first
15 liberal arts college, which grew into the Florida State
16 College for Women, the nation's second-largest state college
17 for women, recognized by the Association of American
18 Universities in 1924, and
19 WHEREAS, today the university's mission emphasizes
20 teaching, research, and public service, with 17 independent
21 colleges and schools, the newest being the College of
22 Medicine, with coursework first taught in the late 1800's, and
23 WHEREAS, with graduate and undergraduate degrees
24 offered in more than 570 fields, many of which are nationally
25 recognized programs, Florida State University's comprehensive
26 offerings prepare students for graduate school, professional
27 degree programs, or successful careers, and
28 WHEREAS, Florida State University is a leader in the
29 use of new technologies, setting the standard for distance
30 learning and using technology in the classroom as well as

1 campus-wide, which allows professors and students to share
2 research with colleagues and students around the world, and
3 WHEREAS, Florida State University consistently ranks
4 among the top three universities nationally in revenues
5 generated from scientific research and discoveries, which
6 ranking is an indicator of the university's successful
7 commercialization efforts; and the research foundation
8 continues to grow, and
9 WHEREAS, well-rounded and successful graduates have
10 taken advantage of Florida State University's high-quality
11 academics and research and have gained service, social, and
12 leadership skills and have prepared themselves to take a
13 meaningful role in society, and
14 WHEREAS, through a long-continuing tradition of
15 promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity on its
16 campus, along with the aggressive recruitment of diverse
17 groups of students, the college experience has become more
18 enriching for Florida State University students, and
19 WHEREAS, Florida State University has a strong
20 reputation in the fine and performing arts, having developed
21 distinguished programs in theater, music, dance, and film, and
22 having established a statewide presence with the Asolo
23 Theatre, the Ringling Museum, and the Appleton Museum, and
24 WHEREAS, Florida State University continues to be a
25 tremendous source of pride for its students, faculty, alumni,
26 friends, and administrators, as well as for all residents of
27 the State of Florida, and
28 WHEREAS, with its strong history as a liberal arts
29 college, commitment to undergraduate education, and extensive
30 and distinguished research in facilities such as the National

1 High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University is
2 truly on the cutting edge of higher education, NOW, THEREFORE,
3
4 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
5
6 That the Florida Senate celebrates March 5, 2002, as
7 "F.S.U. Day" in Tallahassee, in honor of Florida State
8 University's contribution as an outstanding institution of
9 higher education.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
11 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Talbot
12 "Sandy" D'Alemberte, President of Florida State University, as
13 a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
