  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution commending University of Florida

  3         graduate Jack Youngblood for his athletic

  4         achievements.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, Herbert Jackson Youngblood was born in

  7  Jacksonville on January 26, 1950, and

  8         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood played high school football at

  9  Jefferson County High School in Monticello, where he was named

10  an All-State player in 1966, and

11         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood played college football at the

12  University of Florida, where he was an All-American defensive

13  end in 1970, won All-American honors as a senior, and played

14  in the Senior Bowl and College All-Star games, and

15         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood received numerous college

16  football honors, was named the Most Valuable Defensive Lineman

17  in the SEC in 1970, was named to the SEC Quarter Century Team,

18  and was named to the University of Florida's All-Century Team,

19  and

20         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood was drafted by the Los Angeles

21  Rams in the first round of the 1971 draft, the first Gator

22  defensive lineman to be picked in the first round, and

23         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood, in 14 seasons with the Rams,

24  played in 201 games out of 202 during his tenure, a team

25  record, and

26         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood won the Dan Reeves Award three

27  times; was All-Pro five times; was All-NFC seven times; played

28  in seven consecutive Pro-Bowls; and was twice named NFL

29  Defensive Player of the Year, with over 150 career sacks

30  before he retired in 1984, and

  1         WHEREAS, called the "John Wayne of pro football," Jack

  2  Youngblood played the second half of the Dallas playoff game,

  3  the entire NFC Championship game, and the entire Super Bowl

  4  XIV with a broken leg, but his most outstanding single-game

  5  performance came against the St. Louis Cardinals in a 1975

  6  playoff game, when he recorded one sack, one forced fumble,

  7  and one blocked extra-point attempt and returned an

  8  interception 47 yards for a touchdown, and

  9         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood, out of the 211 inductees in

10  the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is only one of four who played

11  high school or college football in this state, and is the only

12  inductee from the University of Florida, and

13         WHEREAS, on January 27, 2001, the day after his 51st

14  birthday, Jack Youngblood was bestowed the highest form of

15  praise a pro football player can hope to achieve, election to

16  the Pro Football Hall of Fame, NOW, THEREFORE,

17

18  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

19

20         That Jack Youngblood is commended for his outstanding

21  athletic accomplishments in high school, college, and

22  professional football.

23         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

24  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Jack

25  Youngblood as a tangible token of the sentiments of the

26  Florida Senate.
