  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing Jennifer Rodriguez,

  3         winner of the Bronze Medal in the Women's

  4         1000-meter Speedskating event at the 19th

  5         Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, Jennifer Rodriguez was born in Miami in 1976,

  8  the daughter of a Cuban-American father, Emilio Rodriguez, who

  9  immigrated to the United States from Cuba in the 1960s and, as

10  a commercial artist, designed the logo for Miami's Joe Robbie

11  Stadium, and

12         WHEREAS, Jennifer began roller skating at the age of 4

13  when she attended a birthday party at a roller rink and her

14  parents, Emilio and Barbara, recognizing her talent, took her

15  for lessons, and

16         WHEREAS, Jennifer Rodriguez was competing in artistic

17  and speed roller skating by the time she was 5, won a total of

18  12 World Championship medals in artistic roller skating and

19  speed roller skating, and was named the 1991-1992 United

20  States Roller Skating Athlete of the Year, and

21         WHEREAS, following her transition from roller skating

22  to ice skating, Jennifer Rodriguez placed fourth in the

23  3,000-meter event at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano,

24  Japan, and set United States records in the 1,500-meter event

25  and 3,000-meter event at the World Cup in Calgary in March of

26  2001, and

27         WHEREAS, Jennifer Rodriguez is the first athlete of

28  Hispanic descent to compete in the Olympic Winter Games,

29  adding to the diversity that contributes to the success of

30  Olympic teams from the United States, and is also the first

31  athlete from Miami to compete at an Olympic Winter Games, and

  1         WHEREAS, by her accomplishments, Jennifer Rodriguez has

  2  brought honor to this state, NOW, THEREFORE,

  3

  4  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  5

  6         That the Florida Senate commends Jennifer Rodriguez for

  7  her outstanding dedication to her sport and to the Olympic

  8  dream and for the honor that she has brought to this state.

  9         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

10  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Jennifer

11  Rodriguez as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida

12  Senate.
