  1                    Senate Resolution No. ___

  2         A resolution in memory of Mayra Capote, victim

  3         of a tragic automobile accident.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, a grieving mother and sister mourn the loss of

  6  a beautiful, vibrant life that was snuffed out on September 8,

  7  1999, when 14-year-old Mayra Capote, along with two other

  8  students from Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, was

  9  killed in a tragic automobile accident as the three friends

10  hurried back to school following an off-campus lunch break,

11  and

12         WHEREAS, born October 4, 1984, Mayra Capote was the

13  light of her mother's eyes and the adored friend, caregiver,

14  and protector of her older sister, Elizabeth, who has been

15  disabled since birth and who keenly misses the companionship

16  and affection of her sister, and

17         WHEREAS, Mayra Capote will forever be remembered by her

18  mother, sister, and friends as a friendly, outgoing, happy

19  child, loving and caring, with a special heart for those less

20  fortunate than she, and

21         WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and

22  Motor Vehicles reports that in traffic accidents in this state

23  during 1998, 1999, and 2000 which involved young people age 15

24  through 18, a total of 22 young people died and 4,496 young

25  people were injured between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00

26  p.m., and

27         WHEREAS, in response to this statewide tragedy and the

28  tragedy involving Mayra Capote, the Miami-Dade County school

29  board approved a plan of action to close all senior high

30  school campuses during the lunch period by the opening of the

31  2004-2005 school year, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  2  

  3         That the Florida Senate expresses its heartfelt

  4  condolences to the mother, sister, and friends of Mayra Capote

  5  and expresses its support for the Miami-Dade County school

  6  board as the board takes action to safeguard the lives of

  7  students.

  8         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

  9  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Mayra and

10  Elizabeth Capote, mother and sister, respectively, of the late

11  young Mayra Capote, as a tangible token of the sentiments of

12  the Florida Senate.
