  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution commending the contributions to

  3         law and order made by correctional officers in

  4         Florida and recognizing these contributions by

  5         the formal designation of their job title as

  6         "Correctional Officers."

  7

  8         WHEREAS, correctional officers in this state risk their

  9  lives daily in the protection of the public, and

10         WHEREAS, our state's correctional officers maintain

11  order in 134 state prisons in Florida, where they were

12  responsible for the management of more than 71,000 state

13  inmates during the past year, and

14         WHEREAS, twenty-six of Florida's correctional officers

15  have lost their lives in the line of duty between 1928 and the

16  present, and

17         WHEREAS, the Legislature and all Floridians recognize

18  the significant role these officers play in preserving the

19  public peace and in reducing crime, and

20         WHEREAS, the designation of correctional officers by

21  their proper title affords them the dignity and respect due

22  them for their important work and provides them with

23  appropriate recognition by the Legislature and the public as

24  law enforcement professionals, NOW, THEREFORE,

25

26  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

27

28         That the Legislature does pause in its deliberations to

29  honor the state's correctional officers as law enforcement

30  professionals and to hereafter recognize them by the title

31  "Correctional Officers".
