  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to disabled veterans; amending

  3         s. 320.0842, F.S.; authorizing certain veterans

  4         to apply for a license plate with the

  5         wheelchair symbol; providing for an annual use

  6         fee; providing for the disposition of the fee;

  7         providing for the collection of other required

  8         fees; providing an effective date.

10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11

12         Section 1.  Subsections (5), (6), and (7) are added to

13  section 320.0842, Florida Statutes, to read:

14         320.0842  Free motor vehicle license plates to veterans

15  who use wheelchairs.--

16         (5)  Any applicant determined by the United States

17  Department of Veterans Affairs or its predecessor to have a

18  service-connected disability rated for compensation between 10

19  and 90 percent or determined to have a service-connected

20  disability of between 10 and 90 percent and in receipt of

21  disability retirement pay from any branch of the United States

22  Armed Services and the disability meets the criteria defined

23  in s. 320.0848(1)(a)1.-7. may apply for a license plate under

24  this section.

25         (6)  Applicants applying under subsection (5) shall be

26  assessed a $17 annual use fee which must be deposited in the

27  State Homes for Veterans Trust Fund. All such fees are to be

28  administered by the Department of Veterans' Affairs and must

29  be used solely for the purpose of constructing, operating, and

30  maintaining domiciliary and nursing homes for veterans subject

31  to the requirements of chapter 216.

  1         (7)  Applicants applying under the provisions of

  2  subsection (5) shall be assessed all fees otherwise required

  3  pursuant to this chapter.

  4         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2002.
