17 Section 1. Children's Medical Services of the
18 Department of Health is authorized to convene a study group
19 for the purpose of conducting comparative research regarding
20 the infant screening programs currently operating in other
21 states. The study group shall consist of members of the
22 Genetics and Infant Screening Advisory Council designated by
23 the Secretary of Health, a representative designated by the
24 Florida Hospital Association, a representative designated by
25 the Florida Statutory Teaching Hospital Council, Inc., and a
26 representative from the Florida chapter of the March of Dimes.
27 The study group shall operate under the auspices of Children's
28 Medical Services. Based on data available from the states
29 operating infant screening programs, the study group shall
30 make recommendations regarding the newborn infant screening
31 requirements provided in s. 383.14, Florida Statutes, and

1 shall develop a newborn infant screening plan tailored to the
2 needs of Florida's population. The study group shall also
3 consider the cost of current testing, the cost of expansion,
4 appropriate mechanisms for reimbursing the cost of testing,
5 and the appropriate location for such testing. The study
6 group's research shall be completed by August 1, 2002, and its
7 recommendations and plan shall be submitted to the Governor,
8 the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House of
9 Representatives by September 1, 2002.
10 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
11 law.
