5 of Health; providing purpose; providing
6 membership; requiring recommendations and a
7 plan for expanding newborn infant screening
8 requirements; requiring a report to the
9 Legislature; providing an effective date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. Children's Medical Services of the
14 Department of Health is authorized to convene a study group
15 for the purpose of conducting comparative research regarding
16 the expanded infant screening programs currently operating in
17 other states and the use of tandem mass spectrometry in such
18 programs. The study group shall consist of members of the
19 Genetics and Infant Screening Advisory Council designated by
20 the Secretary of Health and shall operate under the auspices
21 of Children's Medical Services. Based on data available from
22 the states operating expanded infant screening programs, the
23 study group shall make recommendations regarding the expansion
24 of the newborn infant screening requirements provided in s.
25 383.14, Florida Statutes, and shall develop an expanded
26 newborn infant screening plan tailored to the needs of
27 Florida's population. The study group's research shall be
28 completed by August 1, 2002, and its recommendations and plan
29 shall be submitted to the Legislature by September 1, 2002.
30 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
31 law.
