19 The Florida Legislature recognizes that, a strong
20 economy is vital to Florida's future, and;
21 The Florida Legislature recognizes that, the tourism
22 industry is the largest segment of Florida's economy employing
23 over 775,000 Floridians and providing sustained economic
24 development for Florida, and;
25 That, Florida's tourism industry represents nearly
26 $55.8 billion in annual tourist spending and $15.4 billion
27 annual payroll for tourist-related, jobs, and;
28 That, protecting Florida's tourism industry is vital to
29 Florida's small businesses and small business owners who
30 represent the backbone of our state's economy;
31 The Florida legislature also recognizes that Florida's

1 825 miles of sandy coastline fronting the Atlantic Ocean, the
2 Gulf of Mexico or the Straits of Florida and the marine
3 resources living off our coast are our most valuable natural
4 resources, and;
5 That, Florida's beaches are deserving of protection as
6 they serve several important functions, each being vital to
7 maintaining the health of Florida's economy and environment,
8 and;
9 That, Florida's beaches are vital to Florida's small
10 businesses and small business owners who represent the
11 backbone of our state's economy;
12 It shall be the policy of the state of Florida to
13 protect Florida's tourist industry by prohibiting oil and
14 natural gas drilling within 150 miles of Florida's pristine
15 beaches. The state is prohibited from permitting any activity
16 that allows for oil or natural gas drilling within 150 miles
17 of Florida's coastline.
