2 A resolution recognizing June 2002 as Prostate
3 Cancer Awareness Month in Florida.

5 WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most common cancer
6 diagnosed among men in Florida, and the American Cancer
7 Society estimates that 15,000 new cases of prostate cancer
8 will have been diagnosed among Florida males in 2001 once
9 reports for that year are completed, and
10 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society anticipates that
11 by the end of the year 2001 there will have been 2,400 deaths
12 in Florida attributed to prostate cancer, and
13 WHEREAS, African-American men have a 47-percent higher
14 incidence of prostate cancer than white men, and
15 African-American men are twice as likely to die of prostate
16 cancer than are white men, and
17 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society recommends that
18 annual prostate screening begin at age 50, except that men at
19 high risk of cancer, such as African-American males and males
20 with a family history of the disease, are recommended to begin
21 annual screening at age 45, and
22 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society supports the
23 annual African-American Men's Health Summit as an effort to
24 increase prostate cancer awareness and prostate screening
25 among African-American men in Florida, and
26 WHEREAS, the Man-to-Man Program of the American Cancer
27 Society is an attempt to increase prostate cancer awareness,
28 education, and support, particularly during the month of June
29 but throughout the rest of the year as well, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
2 Florida:

4 That the House of Representatives recognizes the month
5 of June 2002 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and
6 urges all men to gain a better understanding of the risks
7 associated with prostate cancer, to take preventive steps to
8 minimize those risks, and to consult their doctors about
9 annual prostate cancer screening in compliance with the
10 American Cancer Society prostate cancer screening guidelines.
