1 House Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing October 2002 as
3 "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida.

5 WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer
6 diagnosed in the nation's women, and Florida ranks fourth in
7 the nation in the total number of new breast cancer cases and
8 deaths from breast cancer, and
9 WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer, but
10 the single most important risk factor is age, with 64 percent
11 of all breast cancers occurring in women age 60 and older, and
12 WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer
13 Society estimates that a total of 13,100 new cases of invasive
14 breast cancer will be reported in Florida for the year 2002,
15 and
16 WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second most common cause
17 of cancer death among white women and the number-one cause of
18 cancer death among African-American women, and every three
19 hours, one woman in Florida dies of breast cancer, with a
20 total of 2,700 deaths from breast cancer expected among
21 Florida's women in any one year, and
22 WHEREAS, early detection through routine clinical and
23 mammography screening beginning at age 40, as recommended by
24 the American Cancer Society breast cancer screening
25 guidelines, is the key to improving survival rates for breast
26 cancer, and
27 WHEREAS, breast cancer awareness programs, such as the
28 American Cancer Society's Tell-A-Friend-Tuesday program, in
29 conjunction with the promotion of October as "Breast Cancer
30 Awareness Month," will aid in early detection through regular
31 screening, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
2 Florida:

4 That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes
5 the month of October 2002 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month"
6 in Florida and urges all women to make themselves aware of the
7 risks associated with breast cancer, to take preventive steps
8 to minimize those risks, and to undergo early detection
9 procedures such as mammography and compliance with the
10 American Cancer Society's recommended breast cancer screening
11 guidelines.
