  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating February 14, 2002, as

  3         "DD Awareness Day" in Florida.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the Florida Developmental Disabilities

  6  Council, Inc., is the Florida entity charged by federal

  7  legislation to plan and advocate for programs to enable

  8  persons with developmental disabilities to achieve optimum

  9  independence and to promote innovative programs and practices

10  that improve the quality of life for these individuals, and

11         WHEREAS, the Florida Developmental Disabilities

12  Council, Inc., sponsors events such as Developmental

13  Disabilities Awareness Day, or DD Awareness Day, to provide a

14  setting in which related agencies and organizations may

15  provide information about services and products for persons

16  with disabilities and promote understanding of the challenges

17  and obstacles in the everyday lives of persons with

18  disabilities, and

19         WHEREAS, DD Awareness Day is an appropriate time to

20  recognize Florida's public policy accomplishments concerning

21  persons with disabilities and to identify improvements in

22  public policy needed to ensure that inclusion and appropriate

23  services are available to all of Florida's citizens with

24  developmental disabilities, NOW, THEREFORE,

25

26  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

27  Florida:

28

29         That the House of Representatives designates February

30  14, 2002, as "DD Awareness Day" in Florida and joins with the

31  Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc., in

  1  encouraging all Florida residents to participate in events

  2  that appropriately recognize and celebrate the state's diverse

  3  population, including persons with developmental disabilities.
