1 House Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing March 16, 2002, as the
3 200th anniversary of the founding of the United
4 States Military Academy at West Point.

6 WHEREAS, by act of the Seventh Congress of the United
7 States, approved and signed by President Thomas Jefferson, the
8 United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, was
9 established March 16, 1802, and
10 WHEREAS, during the ensuing 200 years, West Point
11 Military Academy has achieved a proud record of graduating
12 dedicated military leaders, public servants, and contributors
13 to society in a variety of areas, including engineering,
14 education, science, and the arts, and
15 WHEREAS, the history of our nation is rich with the
16 deeds of West Point graduates and, while every school child
17 recognizes the names of such notables as Robert E. Lee,
18 Ulysses S. Grant, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, countless others,
19 some lesser known, or known only to their families and
20 friends, have served their country with equal dedication and
21 valor, and
22 WHEREAS, even now, many West Point graduates are
23 continuing to uphold the proud traditions of the academy as
24 they serve our nation at home and abroad in the battle against
25 terrorism, and
26 WHEREAS, the State of Florida counts itself exceedingly
27 privileged to claim 1,510 of its sons and daughters as
28 graduates of the academy, and is proud to recognize the 186
29 young men and women from the state who, as current cadets in
30 the academy, are continuing in the fine examples of the

1 thousands who have preceded them during the 200-year existence
2 of West Point, NOW, THEREFORE,

4 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
5 Florida:

7 That the House of Representatives pauses in its
8 deliberations to congratulate the United States Military
9 Academy at West Point, New York, on the occasion of its 200th
10 anniversary on March 16, 2002, to pay tribute to and extend
11 its sincere gratitude to the thousands of its graduates, and
12 to proudly salute the young men and women who are currently
13 enrolled as cadets of the institution.
