2 A resolution designating the month of October
3 2002 as "Children's Internet Protection
4 Awareness Month."

6 WHEREAS, Internet and online technologies are an
7 invaluable source of information, amusement, and pleasure for
8 scores of users in Florida, providing a window on the world
9 undreamed of a few short decades ago, and
10 WHEREAS, Florida's academic and educational
11 institutions have set the standard for the rest of the nation
12 in providing distance learning and the use of online
13 technology in classrooms, homes, and libraries, allowing
14 students to share coursework and class assignments with fellow
15 students and indeed with those around the world and is perhaps
16 unsurpassed in preparing children to perform research and to
17 better equip them in working toward undergraduate, graduate,
18 and professional degree programs and successful careers, and
19 WHEREAS, early in life, children become familiar with
20 today's advanced technology and are found to be especially
21 comfortable with computers, using them as tools in accessing
22 information in furtherance of educational and academic goals,
23 as well as for entertainment and as a means of interaction
24 with friends and classmates, family members, and others, and
25 WHEREAS, in addition to the positive benefits afforded
26 society, this remarkable technology also provides a means by
27 which unsuspecting users may be preyed upon, with children
28 being especially vulnerable to this type of exploitation, and
29 WHEREAS, believing that awareness and knowledge are
30 indispensable tools in safeguarding the well-being of children
31 and families, the Florida Peace Officers' Association, Inc.,

1 has a long tradition of combatting crime and aggressively
2 promoting safety by offering training and education on the
3 elementary and secondary school levels through programs such
4 as its "Consequences of Crime" and "Kids Against Crime
5 Online," NOW, THEREFORE,

7 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
8 Florida:

10 That the House of Representatives applauds the
11 outstanding efforts of the Florida Peace Officers'
12 Association, Inc., in striving toward increased safety for the
13 state's children and hereby designates the month of October
14 2002 as "Children's Internet Protection Month," a time during
15 which Florida residents are urged to focus their energies on
16 ensuring that use of the Internet is a safe, beneficial, and
17 pleasant experience for all Floridians.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
19 be presented to the Florida Peace Officers' Association, Inc.,
20 as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
