  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring Jack Youngblood.

  3

  4         WHEREAS, Jacksonville-born Herbert Jackson Youngblood

  5  III was chosen an All-State player during his senior year at

  6  Monticello's Jefferson County High School in 1966 and was

  7  offered a football scholarship by the University of Florida,

  8  where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration

  9  and gained national recognition playing defense for the

10  Gators, and

11         WHEREAS, in 1970, a banner year for the Florida senior,

12  Jack Youngblood, in what has been referred to as his "biggest

13  play," recovered a University of Georgia fumble at the goal

14  line, leading to a Florida win; earned a myriad of honors and

15  recognitions too numerous to set forth here; and was selected

16  by the Los Angeles Rams, the 20th player selected in the first

17  round of the 1971 draft and the first Gator defensive lineman

18  ever to be picked in the first round, and

19         WHEREAS, Jack Youngblood played 201 consecutive games

20  out of 202 in 14 seasons with the Rams, missing only one game

21  during that time; led the Rams to an NFL-record seven straight

22  divisional championships; was a three-time winner of the Rams

23  MVP Dan Reeves Award; was all-pro five times and All-NFC seven

24  times; played seven consecutive Pro Bowls; was named the

25  league's defensive Most Valuable Player in 1975; became a

26  two-time Defensive Player of the Year; and, when he retired

27  from professional football in 1984, had more than 150 sacks to

28  his credit, and

29         WHEREAS, called the "John Wayne of pro football," Jack

30  Youngblood played the second half of the Dallas playoff game,

31  the entire NFC Championship game, and the entire Super Bowl

  1  XIV with a broken leg, but his most outstanding single-game

  2  performance came against the St. Louis Cardinals in a 1975

  3  playoff game, when he recorded one sack, one forced fumble,

  4  and one blocked extra-point attempt and returned an

  5  interception 47 yards for a touchdown, and

  6         WHEREAS, out of the 211 inductees in the Pro Football

  7  Hall of Fame, Jack Youngblood is one of only four who played

  8  high school or college football in this state, and is the only

  9  inductee from the University of Florida, and

10         WHEREAS, on January 27, 2001, the day after his 51st

11  birthday, Jack Youngblood was bestowed the highest form of

12  praise a pro football player can hope to achieve, election to

13  the Pro Football Hall of Fame, NOW, THEREFORE,

14

15  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

16  Florida:

18         That the House of Representatives honors Florida's

19  native son Jack Youngblood for his professional career and

20  athletic achievements.

21         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

22  be presented to Jack Youngblood as a tangible token of the

23  sentiments expressed herein.
