  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution proclaiming March 6, 2002, as

  3         "University of Florida Day."

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the University of Florida, the most

  6  comprehensive university in the state and one of the three

  7  most academically diverse in the nation, was the first Florida

  8  institution to achieve university status and, with more than

  9  46,000 students, is the state's largest university, as well as

10  being one of the top five in North America, and

11         WHEREAS, the University of Florida has awarded more

12  than 300,000 degrees, has more National Merit Scholars than

13  any other institution in the state, ranking among the top four

14  public universities in the nation in attracting these

15  scholars, and, in its latest assessments, U.S. News & World

16  Report listed 17 of its graduate and undergraduate programs

17  among the top 10 in the nation, and

18         WHEREAS, the University of Florida has earned

19  increasing prominence among nationally recognized research

20  universities since its admission nearly two decades ago to the

21  prestigious Association of American Universities, the only

22  Florida institution so affiliated, has been awarded $379

23  million in funding for sponsored research, and its researchers

24  are integral participants in the international search for a

25  cure for cancer, the effort to unlock the mysteries of the

26  brain, the designing of the world's next generation of

27  microelectronics, and the building of bridges of understanding

28  among peoples of the world, and

29         WHEREAS, the University of Florida, with more than

30  150,000 alumni living in Florida, is the state's oldest

31  land-grant university, is the only university with extension

  1  programs in every county in the state plus the Seminole Tribe,

  2  has a total annual economic impact of almost $3.2 billion,

  3  more than six times the state investment of $511 million, and

  4  its faculty and staff have recently shattered its initial 2001

  5  Community Campaign goal by contributing more than $822,737 to

  6  local charities, and

  7         WHEREAS, the University of Florida is widely recognized

  8  for its Health Science Center, the most comprehensive academic

  9  health center in the Southeast, maintains, through its

10  Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, an active

11  people-directed program network reaching 2.7 million group

12  participants and engaging over 58,000 volunteers in urban

13  horticulture, youth and family development, nutrition

14  education, and natural resource enhancement throughout the

15  state, is home to one of Florida's splendid cultural centers,

16  and the northeastern area of its campus is listed in the

17  National Register of Historic Places, NOW, THEREFORE,

19  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

20  Florida:

21

22         That the House of Representatives proclaims March 6,

23  2002, as "University of Florida Day" in recognition of the

24  university's academic achievements, outstanding private

25  support, and invaluable service to the state.
