  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Brian Shimer, United

  3         States Olympic Bronze Medalist.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, few achievements, if any, deserve greater

  6  praise and admiration than bringing home an Olympic medal, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida is home to many great athletes and

  8  Olympic heroes of summer competition, and of those we are very

  9  proud, and

10         WHEREAS, Florida's subtropical climate and year-round

11  sporting opportunities have yielded few Olympic heroes of the

12  winter games, and

13         WHEREAS, Naples' own Brian Shimer chose winter sports

14  and devoted the past 15 years of his life to the quest for a

15  Winter Olympic medal, and

16         WHEREAS, those years of training and dedication bore

17  fruit February 24, 2002, at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt

18  Lake City when Brian Shimer was awarded an Olympic Bronze

19  Medal for piloting the USA-2 four-man bobsled, and

20         WHEREAS, through his dedication, integrity, discipline,

21  and perseverance, Brian Shimer embodies the true Olympic

22  Spirit, and

23         WHEREAS, he was bestowed by his United States Olympic

24  teammates the honor of carrying the American flag at the

25  closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Games, and

26         WHEREAS, Brian Shimer has become a true sporting hero

27  to all Naples and Collier County residents, to all Floridians,

28  and to all Americans, NOW, THEREFORE,

30  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

31  Florida:

  1         That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes

  2  the outstanding achievement of Naples' Brian Shimer and

  3  congratulates him for representing Naples, Florida, and the

  4  United States of America as one of the world's great

  5  champions.

  6         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

  7  be presented to Brian Shimer as a tangible token of the

  8  sentiments expressed herein.
