1 House Resolution
2 A resolution designating March 5, 2002, as "FSU
3 Day" in Tallahassee.

5 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State
6 University is the oldest continuous site of higher education
7 in Florida and holds the state's first chapter of Phi Beta
8 Kappa, and
9 WHEREAS, Florida State University, formerly the Florida
10 State College for Women, which was recognized in 1924 by the
11 Association of American Universities as the nation's second
12 largest such state college, emphasizes teaching, research, and
13 public service, with 17 independent colleges and schools, the
14 latest being its College of Medicine, and offers undergraduate
15 and graduate degrees in more than 570 fields, many of which
16 are nationally recognized programs, and
17 WHEREAS, Florida State University enjoys a strong
18 reputation in the fine and performing arts, having developed
19 distinguished programs in theatre, music, dance, and film, and
20 is a leader in the use of new technologies, setting the
21 standard for distance learning and utilizing technology in the
22 classroom and campuswide, thus providing professors and
23 students alike an opportunity to share research with
24 colleagues and students around the world, and
25 WHEREAS, with its research facilities, as exemplified
26 by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State
27 University is on the cutting edge of higher education and, in
28 1994, was designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a "Research
29 I" institution, placing it in an elite group of the nation's
30 top research universities, and consistently ranks among the

1 top three universities nationally in revenues generated from
2 scientific research and discoveries, and
3 WHEREAS, with a long-continuing tradition of promoting
4 racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity on its campus, and with
5 its emphasis on academics, research, and programs that enhance
6 service, social, and leadership skills, the college experience
7 is indeed an enriching one for Florida State University
8 students, and is a source of great pride for its students,
9 faculty, alumni, friends, and administrators and for all
10 Floridians, NOW, THEREFORE,

12 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
13 Florida:

15 That the House of Representatives designates March 5,
16 2002, as "FSU Day" in Tallahassee.
17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
18 be presented to Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte, President of
19 Florida State University, as a tangible token of the
20 sentiments expressed herein.
