  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating March 13, 2002, as

  3         "Alachua County Day."

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Alachua County was founded in 1824 and

  6  originally stretched from the Georgia border to Tampa Bay, and

  7         WHEREAS, Alachua County now covers an expanse of more

  8  than 900 square miles and is situated in the heart of Florida,

  9  and

10         WHEREAS, Alachua County is home to the University of

11  Florida, which traces its beginnings to the establishment of

12  the East Florida Seminary in 1853, and the University of

13  Florida is the only university in the state that is a member

14  of the prestigious Association of American Universities, and

15         WHEREAS, Alachua County is home to the Institute of

16  Food and Agricultural Sciences, which provides scientific

17  knowledge and expertise to the public in all of the state's 67

18  counties through the Florida Cooperative Extension Service,

19  and

20         WHEREAS, Alachua County is home to the first and oldest

21  public medical school in the State of Florida, and

22         WHEREAS, Alachua County is home to Santa Fe Community

23  College, founded in 1965, which awarded degrees and

24  certificates to more than 2,000 students in the 2000-2001

25  academic year, and

26         WHEREAS, Alachua County's natural resources, including

27  such gems as Paynes Prairie, San Felasco Hammock, Newnan's

28  Lake, and Watermelon Pond, provide year-round recreation and

29  enjoyment for Florida's citizens and visitors alike, NOW,

30  THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  4         That the Florida House of Representatives designates

  5  March 13, 2002, as "Alachua County Day."
